Leviathan (2015), Andrey Zvyagintsev ★★★★★

You can tell Zvyagintsev is an admirer of Yasujiro Ozu’s work with the opening establishing shots of Leviathan. And the way he sets a shot of an area that will relate to a character, and use that shot later and you know you’re back with that character. While watching GETT: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem (2015), basically with the married couple as the two main characters, one individual stands out with a performance that sets up a chain of outside characters. Leviathan has one such performance – the cop’s wife, played by Anna Ukolova.

One scene where something unknown happens off camera and she’s trying to figure it out while explaining to her son:

[spoiler]You coppers just going to wait for the mayhem to start?

Mom, what’s mayhem?

You’ll know when you’re older.

I want to know now.

Let’s put that gun away…, from harm.

Mom, what’s harm?

Quit bugging me. Remember when you set the cat on fire?

Yeah. Who did it this time?

Nobody.

Then where’s the harm?

Knock it off.[/ spoiler]
